Having previously worked as an Archaeologist, I have found that one of the many fascinations in that field of study is the way in which excavations give you snapshots from history. You can open up a tiny window in the ground and look across ages, into another world. You can find the traces of other human beings who left their mark in that specific place at a specific moment somewhere in the unfathomable sea of time. It's a very surreal feeling and it sometimes sneaks back into my art.
There is something of that here; although, to be honest, this painting was primarily a fantastic excuse to paint round huts on a shore. The setting is vaguely mesolithic, and if you are unsure what that means, all the better - then you won't give me a hard time about all the elements that are pure fantasy.
